There is a middle road between leaving your baby to "cry it out" and "waiting it out".

The Sleep Lady Shuffle

In a nutshell, the method involves putting your child down awake and comforting your child while you sit next to the crib. Every few nights, you move farther away, while continuing to soothe from afar, until you're eventually outside the door -- and finally, back in your own bed. Within a couple of weeks, you should be able to put your baby down, say good night, and walk out the door knowing that she'll be able to fall asleep without crutches such as nursing, rocking, or patting.
